DRAKE

2014

The Drake Equation plots the probability of intelligent life arising in the galaxy. Accounting for the habitability of planets, the existence of civilizations, their communicability and longevity, the equation shapes our understanding of the most puzzling of cosmic phenomena: Life. The SETI Institute (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) has been listening for signals in the night sky for decades with the Drake Equation as their guide.
The Hat Creek Radio Observatory was originally built to be SETI’s primary observatory, and would expand from the current 33 antennae to as many 350. These 3-story tall dishes scan the sky in concert with each other, generating massive quantities of data for researchers to comb through. Though they are objects of high technology, they are also forms built to respond to nature, seeking out the particular patterns that identify intelligence emergent elsewhere in the galaxy.
